Exeri in Branschaktuellt Energi & Industri

Exeri is in Branschaktuellt Energi & Industri #1 2020:

A functioning electricity grid is necessary for a modern society. Today in Sweden we have over 40 000 power outages annually and the average length for them is 6.5 hours. We cannot eliminate the disruptions completely, but we can drastically reduce the time for them - and even reduce the number.

The electricity grid has worked in the same way for over 100 years. Unlike the internet, the electricity grid only consists of twisted metal wires, completely without built-in intelligence. If an error occurs, the grid operators have very limited opportunities to locate it. Now there is a possibility to know what is happening in the electricity grid and thereby you can finally have a real "Smart Grid".

- With the help of Smart Grid Surveillance we can directly show the grid operator not only that they have a fault in their network, but also where the fault is and what type of fault it is. The grid operator can directly restore power to anyone who is indirectly affected, while maintenance personnel know exactly where to go to repair the fault. In this way, we can reduce the time for power outages by more than 50%, says Magnus Karlsson, CEO of Exeri and adds:

- Smart Grid Surveillance also collects statistics on minor disturbances. We can present where maintenance should be done to avoid future errors. The system provides totally new opportunities to work proactively and cost-effectively with the problems in the electricity grid.

Increased reliability

In order to maintain the increasingly important delivery reliability, it is necessary to actually know how the grid works and operates.

- Power lines themselves can never be intelligent, this must be added as an extra layer of intelligent sensors that can independently make decisions when something has happened. You must also have knowledge of the structure of the entire network and what happens in the event of a short circuit, for example, in order to be able to draw the right conclusions. This image quickly becomes too complex to handle, but with smart sensors and AI, you can directly identify both where and what the problem is and at the same time have a situational picture of the entire grid.

Complete system design

The system is easy to install and self-calibrating, AI algorithms ensure that all agents are constantly adapted to prevailing conditions. The agents have a battery with ten years of operating time and operate for years without the need for maintenance, which gives a very low operating cost.

- The result of our complete system design is that you as a grid operator can just sit back and for the first time see what is actually happening in your network.”
