Exeri signs deal with Övertorneå Energi to deliver AI-based condition monitoring with intelligent sensors

Exeri, Sweden’s leading provider of advanced grid monitoring and decision support solutions for electric utilities, today announced that it has signed a contract with Övertorneå Energi to deliver its condition monitoring and decision support system Smart Grid Surveillance consisting of intelligent distribution grid sensors, secure radio communication and AI-based decision support. The system will help Övertorneå Energi locate outages quicker and thus get crews to an electric fault location faster. This to speed power restoration for their customers in the municipalities of Haparanda and Övertorneå.

“We are delighted to be part of Övertorneå Energi’s strategy to improve reliability and grid safety,” says Exeri CEO Magnus Karlsson. “Exeri is seen as an innovation leader in the utility industry. We are seeing more and more utilities looking to benefit from our solution.”

Exeri Smart Grid Surveillance will also allow Övertorneå Energi to capture data related to outages and enable the grid operator to identify and analyze disturbances so they can be addressed before an event occurs.

“The aim of the installation is to identify locations of electrical outages more accurately, helping us respond quicker and speed restoration for our customers,” says Henrik Luttu, CEO Övertorneå Energi.  “We are excited about this large-scale deployment and with the decision support software we hope to prevent many of the faults from occurring in the first place.”

The intelligent line sensors will allow Övertorneå Energi to detect disturbances in the grid and use the information to isolate faults, detect defective equipment before it fails and analyze the patterns of events to predict future outages. The system continuously monitors the grid and immediately sends useful data back to the utility. As a result, historical data can be used to analyze, predict and repair potential faults before they occur.

"With this system can we better identify and correct short power interruptions caused by transient faults, such as birds, trees and snow loads. These types of interruptions are most bothering for our customers but very difficult to troubleshoot with current technology" says Henrik Luttu.

“We have developed the industry’s most accurate and reliable distribution grid fault detection and analysis system, to achieve greater reliability at a lower cost” says Magnus Karlsson. “We believe that in the near future, grid sensors equipped with advanced analytics and communications technology will play a significant role in providing reliable service at many forward-looking utilities, in Sweden and abroad.”
