Exeri smart IoT technology shortens the outage time for Öresundskraft during autumn storm

Exeri Smart Grid Surveillance was installed in the grid of Öresundskraft this autumn and already during commissioning proved the system its value by enabling a very fast restoration of electricity during an autumn storm.

Strong winds prevailed in the northern part of Skåne on November 19 and during the storm a power outage occurred in an area near by Hallandsåsen. At 12:10 power for 288 customers disappeared.

Positive for the households was that the outage time was much shorter than normal for situations like these. The system Smart Grid Surveillance (SGS) from Exeri was installed in the area a couple of weeks earlier. SGS, providing continuous condition monitoring of the electric grid, presented both the alarm for the interruption and the exact fault position in the grid (see yellow marking in picture below), as well as decision support on which disconnector to open to isolate the fault.

The majority of the affected customers thus got electricity back in less than four minutes. This because the Network Operations Center immediately knew not only about the fault, but also the fault position and how to make remote re-connections to minimize the effect of the interruption. After re-connections were personnel sent to the scene to look for the cause of the power outage. This is normally a time consuming and difficult part when working with power outages in the overhead grid. But on November 19 was the time for fault positioning very short as SGS had indicated between which two line poles the error was. The cause of the outage was obvious for the line workers arriving to the scene, see picture below.

After the tree had been cut down, the last customers got the power back at 14:48.

“Exeris system delivered exactly to our expectations. The outage time for the customers today was several hours shorter than it would had been two weeks ago. We also did not need to have our line workers out in the woods in the dark looking for the fault.”,  says Magnus Sjunnesson, technical manager at Öresundskraft.

The Smart Grid Surveillance delivery to Öresundskraft includes over 200 IoT-sensors, secure radio communication and AI-based decision support. The system provides continuous monitoring of the overhead power grid and new possibilities to reduce the downtime for electricity consumers.
